Wealth and Love are themes in the story. Sean believes his happiness is wrapped up in the wealth they accumulate, and in that wealth he feels safe. Life is easy, and as their claims produce, he and Duff live large. They drink to excess, eat to excess and forge a dependency on money. He lives to regain his wealth. It is what he starts out to do with Duff and their search for ivory leads to Duff's death. At that moment, wealth ceases to have so much allure or meaning. When Sean returns to civilization, bringing ivory out of the bush, he leaves Duff's share buried. Though worth a fortune, and easily doubling his wealth financially, he just leaves it. Given a choice, it is probable that Sean would give his half of the ivory if he could have Duff back.
