Why does George run away into the wilderness in the novel, When the Legends Die?

Frank No Deer often stole money, food, and other things from Tom Black Bull's father, pushing him to the point of getting into a serious fight in which Frank No Deer ends up dead. It is because of this death that Tom Black Bull's father, George, runs into the wilderness, with his family eventually following him.
