The themes of God's creative power helps to drive the plot, as God dayby-day creates amazing things, including the Internet and bagels (Moe is the Angel of Bagels), as well as plants and animals. God is delighted by what He creates, and He makes Earth a complex place full of surprises. Further, He wishes to let everyone in on the fun. Therefore, he appoints angels to be in charge of different aspects of Creation.

"He made Sara Angel of Mercy, Jennifer Angel of Clouds, Moe the Angel of Bagels, and Aviva Angel of Bugs. (She was weird, anyway.)". And poor clumsy Meshabber is in charge of death (and tricked by a cat).
