Why is Miranda's mother so sad about her life?

Miranda's mother was a law student when she became pregnant and had to drop out. This point is important because Miranda's mother now works in a law firm, but as a receptionist. Miranda's mother is saddened by her position in life and this motivates many of her actions throughout the novel.
