Why is Miranda startled upon returning home from school one day?

In Chapter 16, Miranda returns home to find the apartment door unlocked. When Miranda does not find anything missing, she thinks her mother forgot to lock it. However, her mother insists she locked the door. They check the fire hose and discover the spare key is gone.
