Why are Annemarie, Colin and Miranda fired from their jobs and what do they do to try to get them back?

In Chapter 36, Annemarie, Colin, and Miranda are fired from their job because someone stole the ceramic bank filled with two dollar bills. Annemarie buys a card and they all sign it, hoping to get their jobs back.
