Why does Gert have trouble with his college courses in the novel, When We Were Vikings?

Gert has trouble focusing on his classes, in part because he feels obligated to work for Toucan. Gert is nearly expelled from the school, but he is given another chance on the condition that he attends a summer semester. However, Gert drops out of the school by the end of the novel.
