Why did Mamam appear on the plantation grounds in the novel, When We Were Birds?

Maman appeared on the plantation grounds to avenge the murders of two slaves who were hung after they ran away but were captured. She burned the plantation house to the ground, and the people who lived there abandoned the property because they were afraid of her. Maman built the original house in which the St. Bernard women live on the ruins of the former plantation house.
