What is the significance of storms in the novel, When We Were Birds?

Storms are symbols of death and birth. There is a storm each time one of the St. Bernard women dies. Petronella tells Yejide that they die in a storm because the storm gives them the energy that they need to pass to the other side. These storms also symbolize the birth of a woman of a new generation whose responsibility it is to look after the dead.
