Just as Mrs. Perez struggles to keep the family socially relevant, Mr. Perez has dedicated himself to regaining the wealth they lost and providing for his family the only security he knows, himself: money. The displacement from Cuba has also altered Beatriz’s role with her father, as she comforts him by, “Wrapping an arm around him, as though our roles have shifted, and I’m the parent comforting the child” (66).
