In the early chapters of the novel, Two spends a significant amount of time visiting the buffalo, Adam, in his enclosure. The animal reminds her of her childhood and the ranch where her family lives. She also feels particularly drawn to Adam and his energy. The narrator often depicts her in communion with Adam, learning his moods, and attempting to communicate with him. After her fall, Two worries about Adam because she has not been able to visit him. Once Crawford gives her Gay, Two returns to Adam. She talks to him, and explains everything that has happened in her life since her last visit.
