As a graphic memoir, Jamieson and Mohamed play with color and structure to reflect certain emotional events or memories for Omar. The memoir is structured with black frames around the pictures, word bubbles, and captions for Omar’s narrative or inner thoughts. The color tones are in general bright and clear. When Omar is explaining a memory, the frames disappear, the image is more blurry, and the authors use more sepia tones to show that this is a memory, and in the past. Occasionally when Omar is having strong feelings, the authors use no frames or have body parts or things in the image fall out of the frame in order to break the fourth wall with the reader - and create a more intimate and close experience for the reader.
