When Omar departs for resettlement to America it is with great sadness that he is leaving without his mother. But he also thinks “maybe she is not gone. She is in the love that surrounds us and the people who care for us . . . So perhaps we’re not leaving our mother behind. Maybe she’ll always be with us” (254).
