Esmerald's brother, Raymond, is left in her care while their mother works, and it's during an afternoon when Ramona is working that Raymond insists on riding a cousin's bicycle. An accident mangles Raymond's foot, and he is taken to the hospital, but the injury refuses to heal for a long time, and he is eventually taken to New York for medical care. It's this trip that prompts the family's move to New York.
