What were the risks of putting Paul on a ventilator?

There were risks associated with putting Paul on a ventilator. The concern was that Paul would remain too ill to ever come off the ventilator and be lost to delirium and organ failure with first his mind and then his body slipping away. That was an agonizing way to die for the patient and the family.
