How did Paul feel when he made a trip to New York in the Prologue?

Paul's back stiffened horribly during the flight. By the time he got to the train station, he had back spasms and pain that were so bad he curled up on the floor screaming. During the visit to see his friends, he alternated between back pain and fatigue and finally had to leave.
