How did Paul feel about his life when he learned he had cancer at the beginning of Part 2, Section 1?

When Paul learned he had cancer, he felt that one chapter of his life had ended, and possibly the book of his life was closing. Instead of aiding others through transitions, he found himself in a transition guided by others. He felt like the path of life he was walking had been bombed and he had to work around it.
