Why did Maurice struggle in school in the novel, When All Is Said?

Maurice attended the Rainsford National School, where he came to believe he was stupid because he could not grasp the idea of reading and writing even though his brother coached him constantly. As an adult, Maurice learned that he was not stupid. He had dyslexia, a reading disability.
