By placing Joe in a three apparently illogical postings, the Archbishop carefully directs Joe even though Joe himself is mystified by his postings. The Archbishop places Joe with a fellow contemplative to teach Joe the importance of parish duties. He then places him with the Catholic charities organization to show Joe the relevance of money to the function of the Church. He posts Joe at SS. Francis and Clare, a new parish, to introduce Joe to the realities of pastoral duties. And finally, after prodding Joe with the photo op at the parish, he assigns Joe to what he is only now ready to undertake: missionary work in the slums of Minneapolis.
