Why does Gerta's father take a new surname in the graphic novel, What the Night Sings?

When Gerta and her father move to Würzburg, Germany, her father took on a new surname and identity as a gentile. Gerta, thus grew up homeschooled and sheltered, unaware of her Jewish heritage.
