What is the setting of What Hearts by Bruce Brooks?

What Hearts is set in North Carolina in the early sixties. At the beginning of the novel, the characters are in Washington, D.C. but quickly leave for the beaches of North Carolina. From there the characters move quite frequently, often moving more than twice a year. The family finally settles in a two story house in an unnamed town more than an hour's drive from Raleigh.
