For Nelson, Paris symbolizes freedom. While in Paris, he feels free to be whoever he wants to be. The city not only offers him new opportunities, but lets him escape his past selves. While here, he not only ignores Noelle's calls, but sleeps with another woman, actions which illustrate his deep desire for anonymity, escape, and liberation.
