The author uses Ray's character as a symbol of love. He loves Jade in a way that she has never been loved before. Ray also loves and devotes himself to Gee like he is his own son. Everything he does is in the name of caring for his family. Ray's character, therefore, appears almost too perfect. When he is killed at the end of Chapter One, his memory is canonized, making Ray appear like a saintly figure.
