How does Ken Carver die in the novel, What’s Eating Gilbert Grape?

Ken dies when he supposedly has a heart attack and drowns in a wading pool while filling it up with water for his sons to swim. Many of the residents of Endora, however, think Betty Carver killed Ken for the insurance money.
