Why does Kate keep the gold bee-shaped brooch in the novel, Weyward?

Violet gave Kate the brooch when they met at Graham’s funeral. The brooch was damaged when Kate’s father pushed her out of the way of the car that kills him, and Kate keeps it as a reminder of her guilt.
