Why does Grace go to Altha to end her pregnancy in the novel, Weyward?

After giving birth to more than one stillborn baby, John beat Grace severely as a punishment. His beatings became so bad that he scared her into going to Altha for a potion to abort the baby she had learned she was carrying because she feared John would kill her if it was born dead.
