California, also referred to as 'the land of milk and honey', represents the dreams of an entire generation of Americans who hope for the promise of a better life. As an 'Okie' himself, Woody shares this dream. His travels towards California are representative of the American dream of freedom from poverty and discrimination and the right to lead a life of one's own choosing.
