How does the author use symbolism in the novel, West With Giraffes?

The footlocker that contains all of Woody's possessions at the time of his death is a symbol of the contents of his memory. Even after 105 years of life, Woody leaves this world with no belongings, and only passes on a story. The footlocker is a symbol that encapsulates the memories of a long life, and highlights the importance of stories to lend meaning to life.
