How does Drayle surprise Lizzie in regard to his plans for their son, Nate, in the novel, Wench?

Drayle surprises Lizzie in the novel's conclusion with the news that he has arranged to send Nate to a private school in the north. It is good news, but Lizzie still hoped Drayle would free their son.
