.
.
At the beginning of the novel, Addy is living in Montmartre, a bohemian neighborhood in Paris, and working as a composer and musician. He admires the "throngs of Parisians, young and defiant" (3), and the streets that "are alive with artists and dancers, musicians and students" (4). He visits jazz clubs where he hears performances by Cole Porter and Josephine Baker. All of this freedom and happiness comes to a crashing end when World War II begins.
