Who is Danny from the story, Helpless Little Things, in the collection, We Live in Water?

Danny is the protagonist and narrator of “Helpless Little Things.” He is a criminal and a con artist, and his general outlook is quite cynical. One day, he recruits a homeless teenager named Julie to help him with a scam. To Danny’s surprise, he finds himself developing a sense of compassion for Julie, who says that she was beaten and molested by her stepfather. However, it eventually becomes apparent that Julie is manipulating Danny, and she steals tens of thousands of dollars from him. After Danny realizes that he has been tricked, he does not feel more cynical, but instead feels somewhat uplifted by the fact that he was able to feel compassion towards another person at all.
