The story collection employs a variety of perspectives. However, one thing that remains consistent between almost every story is that there is only one point-of-view character. (The one exception is “We Live in Water,” which alternates between Oren and Michael.)

About half of the stories are narrated in the third person. However, these stories are still told from a specific character’s point of view. In other words, the narration has direct access to the point-of-view character’s thoughts and experiences, but the other characters’ perspectives can only be gleaned via their words and actions. The final piece in the collection is a nonfiction essay written directly from the author’s perspective. In this piece, the author examines the evolution of his own thoughts and opinions regarding his hometown of Spokane. Walter uses this self-reflection as a means of advocating for morals such as altruism and social service.
