How is the forest an important location in the novel, We Know You Remember?

The forest is a setting which recurs throughout the novel. The forest in Kungsgården is the sight of Lina's disappearance and alleged murder 23 years prior to the narrative present. On a night in July of 1996, Lina went into the woods to meet her lover, Kenny. Olof followed her at the behest of his friends. Disgusted by Olof, Lina attacked him and shoved dirt in his mouth. Because Olof let his friends believe they had had sex, the boys later implicated him in Lina's disappearance.

In the narrative present, Eira and her investigative team repeatedly return to the forest in search of new evidence. It is here that they find Olof buried in the dirt. They also discover Mejan's murder effects in the woods. Much later in the investigation, they discover that Tryggve saw Lina here on the night of her disappearance.
