The author uses the color purple as a motif that signifies an other-worldly or mystifying quality. Crooked Crown, the mysterious pop star who transitions from black to white, is depicted wearing purple fur coats, bikini tops, and hats. The Plums, which allow the narrator to experience alternative sensations, are described as “petite, purple pills” (8). The narrator also uses this color when describing strange and inexplicable emotions.
