Penny disapproves of any effort to alter Nigel’s appearance or skin tone, choosing instead to promote self-acceptance much in the same way that the narrator’s parents did for him. For this reason, the issue of Nigel’s face, specifically his birthmark, represents a major conflict between Penny and the narrator, highlighting their opposing ideologies.
