We Are the Ants
How does the author use symbolism in the novel, We Are the Ants?
.
.
The author uses the sluggers represent Henry’s inner consciousness especially as he struggles to find meaning in his life. The choice to press the button signifies Henry’s deep down belief that the world is worth saving. Meanwhile, the idea that the sluggers chose him to decide the world’s fate represents his internal conflict with suffering. This is also why the sluggers do not show up in the ending of the novel for Henry has come to terms with his grief and has chosen to enjoy his life for as long as he has it, making his decision to press the button or not irrelevant.
