The poem is narrated in the first-person singular point of view of the speaker. Wordsworth uses the first-person point of view here in order to frame the text as a retelling of a memory. As a result, the reader feels as though they are getting an intimate look into the mind of the speaker, who tells of their own experiences firsthand. Furthermore, the fact that it is framed as a memory places almost the entire poem in the past tense. The one exception to this is the very first stanza, which in fact is also not in the first person. Rather, it is a third-personal, present tense introduction to the poem that, while outlining the overall theme of the text, almost seems to exist outside of the narrative itself.
