We Are Not Broken
What is the author's perspective in the memoir, We Are Not Broken?
.
.
The memoir is written from the first person perspective of the author, George M. Johnson remembering their childhood. As Johnson’s childhood name was Matt, other characters call them Matt, which adds a layer of distinction. Not only is this the reality of George’s current life - but it also helps separate him as a non-binary person writing the memoir in the present, mostly about a child who at the time identified as a boy. Johnson also includes five other first person perspectives - of letters written by the grandchildren to Nanny. Each of these letters tells their own personal story of why they cherish Nanny - and their unique perspectives add dimensions and layers to the reader’s understanding of Nanny and what growing up with her was like.
