When Rose first meets Harlow and Reg they ask her who her favorite superhero is. Rose is surprised by the question and reflexively answers with Tarzan, which initially seems like an odd choice. When Reg argues that he isn’t a superhero, Rose points out that his ability to communicate with animals makes him special. Since this is early on in the book it just seems like an odd answer from Rose. Rose starts to reveal everything about Fern though and it starts to make sense why she chose Tarzan. Rose frequently mentions how she believes that superheroes are just people with gifts outside of the ordinary for their species. It becomes clear that when she said Tarzan, she was really thinking about Fern because she believes that, like Tarzan, Fern had learned how to communicate with a species outside of her own and that makes her special.
