Why does Molly's housekeeper refuse to come forward with what she knows about the murder in the novel, We’ll Meet Again?

The housekeeper's fear that her son committed the murder keeps her from asking him what he saw on the night of the murder, for she would rather have Molly go to jail than betray her child.
