Why does Emma travel to Rio de Janeiro in the novel, Ways to Disappear?

Emma initially travels to Rio de Janeiro after leaving Pittsburgh to look for Beatriz. Rio is where Emma first meets Raquel and Marcus, as well as the criminal, Flamenguinho.
