Ways to Disappear
What is the author's tone in the novel, Ways to Disappear?
.
.
While the novel generally adopts a brisk pace and playful, poetic tone, this mood is progressively tempered by the much darker narrative elements that gradually inundate the plot and tone. At the beginning of the narrative, its protagonist Emma is a generally idealistic and determined woman. However, this idealism is challenged by the dark revelations that come to light about Beatriz, as well as by the evil and danger represented by Flamenguinho. As Emma struggles to reevaluate her life, the tone of the novel becomes darker and more uncertain. Then, when Marcus is kidnapped and mutilated, the tone becomes even darker. However, by the end of the novel, Emma has achieved a generally happy conclusion to her story arc, and the linguistic focus on poetry and idealism conquers the darker aspects of the text.
