The novel progresses in a linear fashion and is written in the past tense and with third-person narration. Two of the most salient features of the novel’s structure are its short chapters and its rapidly shifting point of view. To convey point of view, the novel utilizes free indirect discourse, often merging the third-person narration with the inner thoughts of various characters. Within any given chapter, the perspective remains consistent, although the perspective changes from chapter to chapter. Although the narrative does not state the scope of its chronology, the main narrative appears to cover a matter of days, or at most a few weeks.
