Berger et al. claim the development of glamour needs the personal envy of one another in a society to be a "common and widespread emotion". The basis of glamour comes from the European oil paintings which display elegance, wealth, authority, beauty, and good fortune. Though the oil paintings do not stimulate envy that modern glamour does.
