Why does Dr. Sloper agree to assist Mrs. Montgomery financially in the novel, Washington Square?

When Mrs. Montgomery meets with Dr. Sloper, she tells him that her brother has been living off of her money, and that he lied about providing an education to her children. For this reason, Dr. Sloper pledges some money to help Mrs. Montgomery financially.
