The author uses the character of Prisca, a light-skinned slave about Virginia's age, to bring out laughter and humor during the tough times. Prisca mimics facial expressions and mannerisms of people when they are not looking, causing fits of laughter among the slaves. Robinet uses Prisca's character to reveal the horrific events of August 1814 with a jovial attitude that makes the information more appealing to grasp.
