Who is Lucy Freeman from War Comes to Willy Freeman and what is their importance?

Lucy is Willy's mother. She is taken captive by the British when Jordan and Willy go to the fort and spends the duration of the war working on a ship. Lucy is released when the British soldiers withdraw and dies soon after.
