Jerkins visited Oklahoma in order to research genealogical intersections between Black Americans and Native Americans. In the 1800s, over 100,000 Native Americans were forcibly relocated by the United States to the Oklahoma territory. Many Black Americans were also forcibly relocated along the same route. Jerkins researched intermingling between Black Americans and Native Americans, as well as the divisions that have been forced between them.
