Why does Orvil use drugs in the novel, Wandering Stars?

Orvil uses drugs as an escape. While high, Orvil feels as if he is entering an alternate realm. He is therefore able to escape reality and inhabit a different version of himself. Ultimately, however, the drugs only divorce Orvil from the real.
