The novel’s linguistic stylings are lyric and poetic. Throughout the novel, the author uses syntactic manipulation and word play in order to exact the texture and atmosphere of the characters’ experiences. In particular, elliptical sentence structures and repetitive diction capture and convey the cyclical nature of the characters’ generational trauma. The exacting rhythms and cadences of the narration throughout the novel also affect a musicality, which echoes the characters’ relationships to their Native culture and the musical traditions of their tribe. Furthermore, Orange’s deft use of language immerses the reader in the emotional complexities of each of his character’s experiences.
